Wienerberger AG is an Austrian building-materials company headquartered in Vienna. It was founded in 1819 by Alois Miesbach, who began making bricks from clay deposits in the Wienerberg district south of the city; after his death in 1857 his nephew Heinrich Drasche took over. The company has been listed on the Vienna Stock Exchange since 1869. It is the world's largest brick producer and describes itself as Europe's leading maker of roof tiles.
Roofing businesses
Wienerberger built its roof tile business through acquisitions:
- Tondach Gleinstatten and the UK maker Keymer Tiles, both acquired in 2014.
- Terreal, the French clay tile and brick group, acquired in 2024. Terreal brought with it the German clay tile maker Creaton and the US terracotta tile maker Ludowici.
Wienerberger was formerly a joint owner of the Austrian concrete roof tile maker Bramac, which it entered in the late 1960s or early 1970s (sources give 1969 or 1973). In 2011 it sold its 50% share to the Monier group, which became sole owner; Bramac is now part of BMI Group, not Wienerberger.
In November 2025 Wienerberger opened an electrically powered concrete tile factory at Sittingbourne in England, and in May 2026 it started building an electric roof tile kiln at Broomfleet, UK, part of efforts to cut fuel-related emissions from tile production.
North America
Wienerberger entered the US in 1999 by buying the brick maker General Shale for USD 260 million. General Shale bought Meridian Brick from Boral in 2021 and, after the Terreal deal, took over management of Ludowici.
Other activities
Besides bricks and roof tiles, the group makes concrete pavers (Semmelrock, acquired 2010) and plastic and ceramic pipe systems. It reported revenue of about EUR 4.6 billion for 2025.
