Roof area
Plan (footprint) area including overhangs, and the pitch.
How these work
Pitch is the same angle written different ways. In North America it's usually rise in inches per 12 inches of run (6/12). In the UK, Europe and Australia it's usually degrees (26.6°). Engineers often use percent (50%), and low-slope roofs are often written as a ratio (1:80).
A sloped roof has more surface than its footprint. Multiplying the plan area by the pitch multiplier, √(1 + (rise ÷ 12)²), gives the actual roof surface for a roof with a single pitch. A roofing square is 100 ft² (9.29 m²) of roof surface.
These figures are estimates. Hips, valleys, dormers, mixed pitches and product coverage all change real quantities. Use a full takeoff or the manufacturer's coverage data before ordering materials.
