Asphalt shingles in Europe

Asphalt shingles are far less common in Europe than in North America, where they cover most houses. In Europe they are used mainly on timber-frame houses, holiday homes, mountain buildings and roofs with curved or complex shapes, where flexible shingles are easier to fit than rigid tiles. They are typically nailed to a continuous timber deck with an underlay, unlike tiles hung on battens, and are covered in Europe by the harmonised product standard EN 544. Shingles are fixed with nails, and in some systems also with self-adhesive strips that bond the overlapping shingles together in the sun's heat to resist wind uplift.
