Vernacular gable echoed in Latvian Art Nouveau

The steep gabled roof is the defining form of Latvian vernacular architecture. Rural farmsteads were thatched, traditionally with rye straw, and the gabled silhouette later influenced the national Art Nouveau architecture of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Thatching survives as a specialist craft, partly serving export demand from Scandinavia.

Climate and hazards

Latvia has a cool, humid climate with snowy winters and frequent freeze-thaw, and a long Baltic coastline. Snow, wind and moisture are the main concerns for roofs; fire is a particular concern for thatch.

Roofing history

The German conquest of the 13th century pushed vernacular building out of Latvia's towns, leaving it as a rural tradition. Villagers built log houses with gabled roofs covered with thatch. From the 19th century, rural houses sometimes added urban details such as neoclassical or historicist features. In Latgale in the east, Old Believers who arrived in the 18th century built wooden houses in a Russian manner. During the National Awakening, architects drew on the gabled vernacular roof in Latvian Art Nouveau.

Traditional and vernacular roofs

  • Thatched farmstead roof: a steep gable roof of straw. According to a working Latvian thatcher, the ancestors used only naturally grown straw, and long, strong stalks of old rye varieties resist breaking.
  • Reed: today reed for thatching is also cut from the ice of frozen lakes in winter.

Roofing today

Thatch is a niche product. One Latvian producer interviewed in 2023 grew rye straw in the Gulbene region, cut reed in winter, and reported strong demand, mainly from Denmark and Sweden; he put the life of a thatched roof at about 20-35 years and used fibreglass fabric beneath the thatch as a fire barrier. Contemporary architects have also used thatch on new holiday homes.

Codes, standards and regulation

As an EU member, Latvia applies European product standards and the Eurocodes, including Eurocode 1, Part 1-3 for snow loads.
