Redland is a British maker of concrete and clay roof tiles and pitched-roof systems. It was founded in 1919 as the Redhill Tile Company, a producer of concrete roof tiles in Surrey, England, and was renamed Redland Tiles in 1946. Today the business trades as BMI Redland, part of BMI Group, and Redland is the oldest brand in that group.
Growth of Redland plc
Redland expanded internationally after the Second World War. In the early 1950s it moved into South Africa, Australia and Malaysia, and took a stake in the German tile maker Braas in 1954, which later became a majority holding. It listed on the London Stock Exchange in 1955. In 1969 it acquired a significant shareholding in Monier Ltd of Australia. In 1990 its US subsidiary bought the roof tile maker Duratile, and in 1991 it bought Marley's US roof tile subsidiary for GBP 6.6 million. Redland plc was headquartered in Reigate, Surrey.
