ÖNORM B 3419, Design and construction of roofings and wall coverings (Planung und Ausführung von Dacheindeckungen und Wandbekleidungen), is the Austrian national standard for pitched roof coverings and similar wall claddings. It is published by Austrian Standards International; as of 2026 the current edition is dated 1 April 2018, replacing earlier editions including those of 2011 and December 2017.

Scope

The standard sets out rules for planning and building roof and wall coverings. It covers:

  • permitted roof pitches for each type of covering material;
  • suitable substrates, such as battens and boarding;
  • wind-load fastening, including how to calculate the fixings needed against wind suction;
  • a simplified wind-load method for single-shell and double-shell roofs with dense or porous (air-permeable) coverings.

It does not cover non-ventilated coverings, metal roofing, or curtain walling governed by ÖNORM EN 13830. Procedural and contractual matters, such as measurement and billing, are covered by the separate work-contract standard ÖNORM B 2219.

Place in Austrian regulation

Building law in Austria belongs to the nine federal states, each with its own building code. Since 2008 their technical requirements have been harmonised through the OIB guidelines (OIB-Richtlinien) 1 to 6, which the states have declared binding in their building technology regulations. Standards such as ÖNORM B 3419 sit alongside these guidelines as the detailed technical rules for a particular trade, and European EN product standards apply to the roofing materials themselves.

Comparable documents

Neighbouring countries handle the same subject in different ways. In Germany, roof-covering rules are set by the technical rules of the roofers' federation ZVDH; in France, by the NF DTU 40 series; and in the United Kingdom, by the code of practice BS 5534, which likewise combines minimum pitch, lap and wind-uplift fixing requirements.

Sources and gaps

Specific minimum pitch values set by the standard were not found in published summaries; the standard itself is the authority for them.
