Holcim is a Swiss building-materials company headquartered in Zug. It was founded in 1912 by Adolf Gygi as Aargauische Portlandcementfabrik Holderbank-Wildegg, in Holderbank in the canton of Aargau, and is best known as one of the world's largest cement producers. In the early 2020s Holcim moved into roofing through large acquisitions in North America, then separated that business in 2025.

Roofing acquisitions

  • Firestone Building Products: bought from Bridgestone, completed on 1 April 2021. The commercial roofing business, maker of EPDM, TPO and PVC membranes and polyiso insulation, was rebranded Elevate on 21 June 2022.
  • Malarkey Roofing Products: a Portland, Oregon maker of residential asphalt shingles, founded in 1956, acquired in early 2022. Holcim projected its 2022 net sales at about USD 600 million and placed it in its Solutions & Products segment.
  • Duro-Last: a Saginaw, Michigan maker of prefabricated PVC roofing, whose acquisition by Holcim's building envelope business was completed in 2023.

Spin-off

Holcim decided to separate its North American business with a full capital-market split. The process was completed on 23 June 2025, when the North American company was listed as Amrize. The roofing businesses (Elevate, Malarkey and Duro-Last) are part of Amrize's building envelope activities. Holcim remains listed on the SIX Swiss Exchange and continues to operate outside North America.

Context

The roofing acquisitions extended Holcim from cement and aggregates into building envelope products. Holcim later combined with the French cement group Lafarge, under a merger announced in 2014; Lafarge had earlier owned the European tile business that later became Braas Monier.
