A roofing shovel, also called a tear-off shovel, shingle remover or roof ripper, is the main hand tool for stripping old shingles from a roof deck before reroofing. It resembles a garden spade but has a flat, wide blade with notches or teeth along the front edge and, on many models, a bent heel or fulcrum on the underside.
How it works
The roofer pushes the blade under the shingles, usually working upslope from the eave or downslope from the ridge depending on crew practice. The teeth or notches catch the shanks of the roofing nails, and the fulcrum heel acts as a pivot so that a downward push on the handle levers the shingles and nails up together. Removing nails with the shingles reduces the work of pulling them separately, though some always remain and must be pulled or driven flush before the new roof goes on.
Variants
- Long-handled shovels for standing work on lower-slope roofs.
- Short D-handle shovels for steeper slopes and tight areas.
- Serrated or smooth blades: serrations grip nails and old felt; smooth blades suit some materials.
- Steel, aluminium or fibreglass handles, balancing durability against weight and electrical conductivity.
- Powered tear-off machines used on low-slope roofs to cut and lift membranes and gravel surfacing.
Related tear-off equipment
- Pry bars and flat bars for flashing and details.
- Magnetic sweepers to collect nails from the ground and driveway.
- Chutes and dumpsters, or trailers placed close to the eave.
- Tarps to protect landscaping, walls and windows.
Safety
Tear-off produces loose debris and slippery surfaces, especially on dusty or wet decks, and workers can lose footing when a section of shingles suddenly releases. Fall protection, roof brackets with planks, and good housekeeping are standard on pitched roofs. Old roofing materials may contain asbestos in some older buildings and regions, which requires testing and specialist handling under local regulations.
