The Roofing Association of New Zealand (RANZ) is the national trade association for roofing businesses in New Zealand. It runs a nationwide network of member companies and lists a postal address in North Harbour, Auckland. Its website is ranz.co.nz.

Membership

RANZ members are vetted against entry criteria and must follow the association's Code of Practice, which sets standards for workmanship, compliance with regulations and professional conduct. The association states that all members meet industry standards for quality, safety and professionalism. Its website offers a member search for property owners looking for roofers.

Activities

  • Training and skills. RANZ supports training and career pathways for roofers, including apprenticeships.
  • Technical support. It provides guidance to members on compliance with the New Zealand Building Code and on good roofing practice.
  • Advocacy. It represents roofing businesses in discussions with government and other industry bodies.

New Zealand roofing context

New Zealand's most common roof covering is profiled metal, typically coated steel, used on both houses and commercial buildings. Other materials include pressed metal tiles, concrete and clay tiles, membranes and asphalt shingles. The climate ranges from subtropical in the north to alpine in the south, with high winds, heavy rain and coastal salt exposure in many areas, so corrosion and weathertightness are major concerns.

Pans (concave) are laid first and carry the water.Covers (convex) sit over the joints between them. Each course overlaps the one below up the slope.

Key technical documents include the New Zealand Building Code clause E2 (External Moisture) and its Acceptable Solution E2/AS1, and the NZ Metal Roof and Wall Cladding Code of Practice published by the New Zealand Metal Roofing Manufacturers association.

Licensing

In New Zealand, certain building work on homes, including roofing, is classed as restricted building work and must be carried out or supervised by a Licensed Building Practitioner (LBP). The LBP scheme has a roofing licence with classes for membrane, metal tile, profiled metal, shingles, torch-on and liquid roofing. RANZ membership is separate and voluntary.
