The Metal Roofing Alliance (MRA) is a non-profit trade association that promotes residential metal roofing in North America. It was established in 1998 with help from the Metal Construction Association (MCA) as a national marketing initiative aimed at homeowners. It operates separately from MCA but its goals are closely aligned.

MRA members include metal roofing manufacturers, suppliers, coil coaters, contractors, distributors and trade media. The group runs the consumer website metalroofing.com.

Activities

  • Consumer education. MRA publishes information for homeowners about metal roof types, colours, cost factors, energy use and maintenance. Much of its work is aimed at the re-roofing market, where asphalt shingles have long been the most common choice in the United States and Canada.
  • Contractor directory. Its website lists member contractors and manufacturers by region.
  • Promotion. The alliance runs marketing campaigns, awards and media outreach to raise awareness of metal roofing for homes.

Context

Residential metal roofing includes standing seam panels, exposed-fastener panels and metal shingles or tiles that imitate slate, shake or clay tile. Common materials are steel with metallic coatings, aluminium, copper and zinc. Because MRA is an industry marketing body, its material reflects the views of its members. Independent technical guidance on metal roofs is also available from building codes, standards bodies and research organisations such as building science laboratories.

Not a licensing body

Membership in MRA is voluntary and is not a licence or certification of a contractor's skills. Homeowners should still confirm local licensing, insurance and references and review the manufacturer's warranty terms.
