Metal Roof Paint Systems (Polyester, SMP, PVDF, Plastisol)

Also known as SMP paint · silicone-modified polyester · polyester paint · plastisol · prepainted steel finishes · PPGI

Nearly all coloured metal roofing is painted at the mill on a coil coating line, not on site. The paint system is a stack of layers over the metallic coating: a chemical pretreatment for adhesion, a primer that supports corrosion resistance, and a topcoat on the exposed face, with a thinner backer coat underneath. The topcoat resin family largely determines how long colour and gloss will last.

Main resin families

  • Polyester: economical, widely used for agricultural, industrial and general roofing.
  • Silicone-modified polyester (SMP): polyester modified with silicone for better gloss and chalk resistance; common on residential and agricultural steel in North America.
  • PVDF (fluoropolymer): premium resin, such as Kynar 500 or Hylar 5000, with very good colour and gloss retention; standard for architectural standing seam.
  • Plastisol: a thick PVC-based coating, typically many times the thickness of other paints and often embossed with a leather-grain texture; historically popular in the UK and northern Europe for its toughness.
  • Polyurethane: also applied on coil lines, typically for tougher, scratch-resistant finishes.

Choosing a system

Factors include climate (UV intensity, coastal salt, industrial pollution), roof slope, colour (dark colours fade more visibly), expected life, and whether a paint warranty for chalk and fade is required. Paint warranties typically set limits for chalking and colour change measured by standard tests, and are often shorter or unavailable near the coast.

Some regional product lines combine a specific metallic coating and paint system under one trade name, such as Colorbond steel in Australia. Highly reflective "cool" pigments can be used in several resin families.

Care

Factory finishes are generally maintenance-light. Scratches should be treated with manufacturer touch-up paint sparingly, since touch-up can weather differently from the baked coating.
