GAF is a North American roofing manufacturer headquartered in Parsippany, New Jersey. It traces its origins to the Standard Paint Company, founded in 1886 in Bound Brook, New Jersey, and is today an operating company of the privately held Standard Industries. GAF makes asphalt shingles for steep-slope homes as well as membranes and insulation for low-slope commercial roofs.
Corporate history
The company's early business was asphalt-based roofing. In 1893 it introduced a ready-to-lay asphalt roll roofing sold under the trademark Ruberoid, and by 1898 it was adding ceramic granules to the surface of those rolls, an approach later carried over into the modern granule-surfaced shingle. The firm took the name The Ruberoid Co. in 1921 and was listed on the New York Stock Exchange in 1935.
In 1967 Ruberoid merged with General Aniline & Film, and the combined business adopted the GAF name in 1968. The same period saw the launch of the Timberline line, described by the company as the first laminated (dimensional) shingle. In 2007 GAF merged with Elk Corporation (ElkCorp), another asphalt roofing producer. Standard Industries, the holding company that owns GAF, later added the European roofing group BMI and the low-slope specialist Siplast to its portfolio.
Products and operations
GAF's residential range centres on laminated asphalt shingles, along with underlayments, ridge caps, ventilation and other accessories sold as a system. Its commercial range includes thermoplastic polyolefin (TPO) membranes, polyisocyanurate (polyiso) insulation, PVC accessories and coatings. The company reports around 30 locations across the United States. It announced commercial manufacturing expansions in Peru, Illinois and Valdosta, Georgia in 2022, and a new residential shingle plant in Kansas in 2024.
Solar roofing
In 2019 the group launched GAF Energy, a sister business focused on roof-integrated solar. In 2022 it introduced Timberline Solar, a solar shingle designed to be fastened with roofing nails like a conventional shingle rather than mounted on racking.
Warranties and programmes
GAF offers manufacturer warranties on its shingle systems and runs contractor certification programmes in North America. In 2021 it introduced a process it calls RoofCycle, aimed at recovering material from torn-off shingles.
