Fletcher Building Limited is a New Zealand building-materials, distribution and construction group headquartered in Auckland. It was created in 2001 when it was split out of the conglomerate Fletcher Challenge, though the Fletcher business traces its building-supply history to 1910, when its first site opened in Dunedin. Fletcher Building operates in New Zealand and Australia, and its retail brand PlaceMakers dates from 1954.
Roofing interests
- Stramit: an Australian roll-former of steel roofing, walling, rainwater and structural products, acquired in 2005 and described as a member of the Fletcher Building Group.
- Stone-coated steel: the DECRA stone-coated steel roofing business, which originated in New Zealand, was owned by Fletcher Building for a period; a 2007 report described DECRA's North American operations as Fletcher-owned. DECRA products are now marketed under a different brand arrangement.
Corporate events
The group's recent history includes several high-profile issues in New Zealand. A fire broke out on 22 October 2019 at the New Zealand International Convention Centre, which Fletcher was building, and in June 2025 the casino operator SkyCity sued Fletcher Building and Fletcher Construction for NZD 330 million over the project. In 2021 the Commerce Commission opened an investigation into whether Fletcher's plasterboard business was blocking competitors, and in 2022 supply shortages led Fletcher to ration plasterboard orders. Andrew Reding became chief executive in August 2024.
Context
Fletcher Building's distribution businesses, such as PlaceMakers, sell roofing materials alongside other building supplies in New Zealand, while Stramit supplies steel roofing in Australia. The group is listed in New Zealand.
